Smoking damages nearly every organ tin the human body and is linked to an increased risk of at least 14 different human cancers, most notably cancers of the lung, larynx, oral cavity, pharynx, esophagus, and bladder. About 4,000 different toxic chemicals have been found in cigarette smoke, 69 of which are known carcinogens.
In 2006 alone, smoking-related deaths exceeded5million would wide and if smoking patterns continue at their present rate, it is estimated that about 450 million people worldwide will die of a variety of disease caused by smoking in the first half of this century.
Tobacco products are the only carcinogens sold for human consumption. It is commonly understood that the final goal of tobacco control is to eliminate tobacco consumption ny the general public.
J-G Park(President of the national Cancer Center from March 2000 to March 2006), proposed to President DJ Kim in 2001 to prohibit the sale of cigarettes in Korea. And The Asian National Cancer Center Alliance(ANCCA) has resolved to bring about a ban on the manufacture and sale of tobacco products. Also, a Meeting of National Cancer Institute Directors(organized at the International Agency for Research on Cancer [IARC] in October 2005) adopted the Lyon Declaration, which resolved to support every initiative to reduce the consumption of tobacco products in their countries, and ultimately to attain a complete ban on tobacco products.
This book was written to clarify the reasons for, and the predicted beneficial effects of, a total ban on the manufacture and sale of tobacco products. Also described in this text are potential difficulties which may be encountered in the implementation of such a ban, and solutions to these difficulties. The Korean edition was published in 2006 by 9 experts in several fields. This year we summarized and translated the book into English to share our ideas and experiences with global leaders in tobacco control.
