This treatise discusses Deok-an (ÓìäÐ), a body of diplomatic archival materials on the Korean and German relations of Late Chosun Korea from the perspective of archival studies. Deok-an contains diplomatic correspondence between the Late Chosun Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the German consulate during this period. The present author studies the nature, the constitution and the content of Deok-an as a first- hand collection of archival materials. The aim of the study is to enhance the accessibility of the public to this collection of archival materials by analyzing not only its historical or scientific-practical meaning, but also its linguistic forms contained therein.
Special attention will be paid to the following contents:
First, we will clarify the commonalities and differences among the various versions of Deok-an. This means the process of systematically presenting the modes of how various versions of Deok-an are interrelated from an inter-textual perspective. The next step of our study is to analyze the relationships between the Korea-related materials of the political archives of the German Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs and those of the Bundesarchiv (German Federal Archives).
Second, we will clarify the characteristics of the forms of the documents as diplomatic correspondence. Deok-an, as a collection of diplomatic materials, is both a linguistic product and a conventional one at the same time. Since the documents of Deok-an take the form of correspondence, they observe certain patterns depending on the authors and the nature of the documents. Thus, this way of analyzing the materials can shed a light to ascertain how languages are employed with respect to language-usage subjects and social demands of that period. This goes beyond merely understanding the linguistic characteristics of the documents.
Third, after reviewing the contents of Deok-an we will establish a brief catalogue of materials contained therein which is to be made in accordance with the contemporary way of classification. Our final step will be to classify the entire 3079 documents of Deok-an according to the content-based inventory list.
