The Annals of the Joseon Dynasty are collective records on the history, culture and social environment of the Korean people. Among our records, peoples of various tribes are often mentioned, especially the Jurchens, with whom the Korean people made frequent contact. The Annals being composed mainly from draft manuscripts of historical events, most of the records on the Jurchen people are composed of material reported directly from the nation's border areas. As a result, various Chinese characters have been used to record identical names of tribes and persons in different ways. In this work, research is presented on such varied character transcriptions, as found in the online version of the Annals.
Chapter I studies the tribe names, Chapter II the names of persons, and Chapter III points out and rectifies some mistranslations. In Chapter IV, the author suggests a new field of study, namely 'Annal Studies', which would promote integrated cross-disciplinary studies based on a proper translation of the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty.
