This study is about the acculturation of North Korean defectors. We focused on two points when we explored their adjustment process. First, we attempted to understand the whole process of defection by viewing their experiences in North Korea, China, and South Korea as a continuous acculturation process. Second, we gave a perspective on the positive sides of the acculturation process. In this study, we used both a qualitative and a quantitative approach. We interviewed 23 North Korean defector families (54 people) and explored how they gave meanings to their defection and adjustment process and what facilitated their adjustment. For the quantitative data, we collected surveys from 195 adults and 44 adolescents. The survey data consisted of social perceptions, value changes, identity, psychological resilience (self-esteem, internal attribution, and self-efficacy), and family resilience (cohesion, adaptation) as well as socio-cultural adjustments, everyday life adjustment problems, and general life satisfaction. From the qualitative and quantitative data, we found that North Korean defectors tried to interpret their experiences in a meaningful way and to prove individual and family resilience. While they have undergone extreme hardships and changes since they exited North Korea and have suffered from financial and affective problems, they make an effort to accept the changes, maintain identity and self-esteem, develop family bonds, and finally to succeed in the new society.
