The Park Chung Hee System, a combination of high economic growth and terrible political dictatorship during the period of Presidents Park Chung Hee (May 1961-October 1979) and Chun Doo Hwan (August 1980-October 1987), came to an end in October of 1987 due to the successful civil-society democratic movements and massive workers' struggles against capitalists. The three main perspectives, i.e. the autonomous national economy perspective, the developmental state perspective, and developmental dictatorship perspective, have interpreted the formation, development, and collapse of the Park system in various ways. They have attributed the high rates of growth to superior state interventions in the economy (state economic policies and policy enforcements) and the administrative prowess of Park Chung Hee himself. These theories went as far as to actually proclaim that the high growth might have been achieved without the political dictatorship. They have failed, however, to connect the high economic growth with the United State¡¯s international cold-war policies and the national political dictatorship. In this book we emphasize that the US had a deep interest in the rapid 'capitalist' development of the Korean economy within the context of the North-South Korean confrontation and the world-wide cold war, and that the terrible political dictatorship was an inevitable response against the widening and deepening class struggle between capital and labour accompanying the rapid capitalist development.
