| This book consists of four parts. Part One deals with methodologies and data for an analysis of North Korea. Part Two deals with the Korean independence movement at home and abroad under the Japanese rule. The role played by the Korean communists and Kim Il Sung is explained within the context of the Korean independence movement. Kim Il SungĄ¯s guerrilla activities in Manchuria and the Soviet Far East are explained. Part Three examines the partition of the Korean Peninsula in August 1945 and the subsequent occupation of the North by the Soviet troops. StalinĄ¯s aims in Korea and Soviet channels through which his ideas were conveyed to Kim Il Sung are also explained. Part Four examines the process leading to the establishment of the North Korean Branch of the Korean Communist Party and Kim Il SungĄ¯s assumption to power within it in December 1945. Political developments in South Korea under the American military government in the same period are also discussed.
